Hi everyone! Last week we had the second level of the story mode released. We got to walk around and talk to the citizens of New Bark Town and go on a little quest to save our starter. This is but the tip of the ice berg for story mode and hopefully you got a taste of what is to come. Did you like it better than the PTD1 style of just watching an intro playing the level and watching an ending? Let me know! Your feedback here in the comments, twitter, emails, facebook and on the forums help shape this game. Like I've said before I spend a good amount of time reading everything you guys write. I might not have enough time to answer them all like I used to but I do the best that I can to answer ones that are crucial or easy enough for a quick answer.

Okay so moving on to this week we will have both a new 1v1 level and a new story level! Lots of new content coming your way.

For both the Story and 1v1 level I will be adding some new technology to the game engine. I've been meaning to add this for a while but haven't had a lot of time. The new technology will be for the trainer you are battling against. Usually they will bring out a pokemon and you defeat that pokemon then they bring out their next one. It's very similar to how the waves work in PTD1 because I'm using the same engine for the trainers that I use in the waves. The new tech will be to allow for the trainers to have a team like you do and to be able to switch out pokemon in battle just like you can. Which will make the fights more interesting and dynamic.

Other than the new tech, 1v1 will now be headed to Route 3, we got some trainers to fight there and also a new pokemon to unlock. Can you guess who it is? All I can say is that it likes to sing a lot.

Speaking of sing, I will be making some changes to how the sleep mechanic works. Previously it would just put you to sleep for a certain amount of time regardless of how much damage you took. Now it will put you to sleep for a longer amount of time but taking damage will most likely cause you to wake up. Making it better for use against somebody that is attack you.

For the Story mode you will be challenged to your first fight. Speaking of this fight I've had reports of people finding an interesting way of leveling up your starter past level 7. This is pretty much my mistake so don't worry if you did it, I will be fixing it in the next version so it should no longer be possible.

Speaking of leveling, I also want to announce a new feature (inspired by my playing of Guild Wars 2)! In PTD1 you could very easily just level up enough so that a level was incredibly easy. In PTD2 there will be a limit as to how high you can be for each level to preserve that level's difficulty (to a point). So for example, lets say your starter is level 12 and you go into Route 29 (The first route in Johto). That means you would massively out level this stage. Most pokemon on this level will be level 2-4. What the game will do is temporarily turn your level 12 pokemon into a level 6 pokemon. Your pokemon will keeps its attacks, evolution, and abilities but it will have stats like it was level 6. Notice that the cap is higher than the highest level in the area but it is still within a certain range. Also since you get to keep your attacks and evolution you will still have an advantage. It just makes it so you can't simply steam roll everything once you get level 100 pokemon. What do you think?

I also plan to bring out the first Mystery Gift! We had a poll a while back and the first Mystery Gift for PTD 2 will be Zorua! Mystery Gift codes will be done a tiny bit different, you will still go to PlayTowerDefenseGames.com and try to figure out the code and you will also enter the code on that site's version of PTD2. Before you could go to any site and enter it but now it is exclusive to their site. Since most people would just find the code on a different site and just use it straight off without visiting our great sponsor.

Lastly I'll also be working on the PTD2 Pokemon Center. It will be very similar to the PTD1 but I still have to do a lot infrastructure changes. I don't think it will be out this week since I have so much to do but I hope to get a good amount done and who knows maybe it will be out too.

Alright so that was quite a bit of info. Let's look at the Weekly Progress list next. Also remember I update this while I'm working so make sure to come back every once in a while to see how I'm doing :)

Alright now let's talk a bit about Creature Universe TD. Many of you might not know but Dan and I hold team meetings every week. We chat with our artist about Creature Universe, we see what everybody is working on and talk about the design of the game. So for the last few weeks we have been talking about the types that we were going to use for Creature Universe. This hasn't been an easy task. We all had different opinions. Some of us wanted to remove some types. Others wanted to add even more types. In the end we started from the beginning and asked ourselves which types MUST be around. After we figured that out we went ahead and added some new ones, combined some other ones and even removed some. Here is the list of the types that will be in Creature Universe! Granted this list could still be tweaked in the future. But for now this is what we have decided.

Normal/Neutral - Unlike Pokemon this type will actually be Neutral to all other types. It has no weaknesses but also no advantages. This type will also be more limited than I pokemon where a bunch of creatures had this type along with another one.
Fire/Flame - Pretty self explanatory.
Water/Aquatic - See Fire.
Grass/Plant - See Water.
Electric/Lightning - See Grass.
Air - This type is pretty much what flying is in pokemon.
Ice - See Electric.
Ground/Earth - This type combines what pokemon would have as Ground and Rock into one type.
Metal - This is kinda like Steel, but it can be different metals. Basically very strong and sharp.
Toxic - Like Poison type in pokemon but a lot better.
Dark - Like Dark in Pokemon but this is the type you would see ghost show up in.
Light - This type is something completely new. It's the counterpart of Dark. You would see more magical creatures like psychic show up with this type.
Mythical - This is the type for legendary creatures. The plan we have for it is that it is very defensive against all types except for Neutral, Light and Dark. It also has no offensive advantages.

So these are out types! Something old, something new, something combined. It's got a little bit of everything. The only types advantage we have figured out are Mythical and Neutral since those are really different from the rest. We are still working on specific type charts for the rest so stay tuned for that later on. Or what kind of type charts can you guys come up with? I would love to see them with explanations as to why you did what you did.

Also creatures will have almost like secondary "types" we are calling it species. For example your creature can be a type Fire but it can also be a bug species. Being a bug will carry certain advantages or disadvantages. Other species might be like "reptile", "mammal". We are still working on this part but I just wanted to mention it so you guys knew about it.

Well that was a lot of info! I hope you guys have a good week this week and as always, let me know what you think!

v5.9.1 is finally out! It's been a nuts I ran into some bugs with the multiplayer that made me a little crazy, I found a workaround for now but it means that for the time being you can't see who you are playing with in multiplayer (They will always have the default avatar and be called Satoshi) other than that I hope you guys enjoy it once PlayTowerDefenseGames updates to the latest version.

TEAM ROCKET STRIKES!

Instead of calling those wonderful hackers well hackers, I will now call them Team Rocket! There was new hack that went public today but I sent it blasting off into space. So no worries! What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and with each new hack that gets fixed the security in the game tightens even more. So thanks Team Rocket for doing your part <3

SCAMS!

I get a good amount of email about people getting scammed and there isn't a lot I can do to help the person that got scammed. Mainly cause it is really hard to prove if somebody got scammed or not.

So to help out, here are some great tips to avoid getting scammed!
  1. NEVER give out your password, this is very important! I will never ask you for your password, anybody that works for me will NEVER ask for it. If somebody ask for your password, it's a scam! Period.
  2. Only do trades that are 6 or less pokemon from each side. Never do trades that require more than one transaction. If one of the transactions you end up giving him really good pokemon for really bad ones than it's a scam.
  3. Ask somebody! Also don't ask the scammer's friend, ask on the message board or ask me if the trade sounds good before doing it.
Okay so this week we will take it easy (I have a test on Thursday >.<) we will have a story level with the PTD First look video will have more details on, some new TMs (Dragon Claw for that commentator that keeps asking for it!) In the new level there will be new pokemon to catch! Wooohooo!

Okay all rested up and ready to go. Last Thursday I had my first programming test at the University, and I felt really good about it. It doesn't hurt that I have years and years of programming experience but I the professor posted the score online and I got an A! Wooohoo! Okay enough bragging... This past week like I mentioned I took it easy but we still got some goodies. Level cap is now 90, and after the 7th gym I believe we will reach 100. My point of view is that I won't raise it past 100 just to keep in line with the games. I also fixed Eruption, a level 85 move that Entei learns, and the sponsor got around to making a code for Tangela so I put that in.

This week we will have a story level involving Gary and one of the legendary birds! I will also make a cooperative version of this same map for multiplayer. A lot of people have been asking for a co-op level and I thought this "boss" level would be a good fit. I'm also going to be having a new mystery gift pokemon, new ability, new achievement, and some new TMs! So I think you guys will really enjoy this update! Also I think a lot of you will ask... you can NOT capture the legendary bird on this level. You will be able to catch them after you learn Surf so be patient :)

Weekly Progress: Pokemon Tower Defense v5.6.1 release, Shadow Pokemon, Safari Zone released, finishing the Pokemon Center look and getting rest!

Want to get the legendary dogs? Shiny Mew? or any other shiny pokemon in the game? Adopt them today using SnD coins! Click here for more info.

Visit the PTD: Pokemon Center - a place to trade pokemon, get your Daily Code, adopt Pokemon, view your items and change your avatar!

WOW, what that was a crazy week! So many new pokemon to catch! I think we have all been waiting for the Safari Zone just for the vast amount of new pokemon. Many of you wanted a Rock Tunnel kind of level but in the end of it I felt that it wasn't really needed. I thought the "Joey" mechanic would be enough to make the level feel fresh.Granted it wasn't perfect on the first try... Due to the quick feedback of you guys I was able to tweak how it works and I think it's in a pretty good spot. Some of you think it's too easy now but I still think that it's providing enough challenge without being incredibly frustrating.

So last week we also had a poll about shadow pokemon's experience gain. While the results were clearly in favor of giving shadow pokemon the similar experience boost as shiny, there was a big public outcry about it so I wanted to tell you guys how I felt about the whole thing and what I ended up doing.

Okay so what I ended up doing was that Shadow pokemon will earn the same experience as a Normal pokemon. COMPROMISE! Some will say "Sam I can't believe you did that, the poll was clear! Why did you give in again!" To understand my reasoning we have to look at why I added Shadow pokemon in the first place. Shadow pokemon were added so that people that people had something to trade to people that had hard to catch or adoption only pokemon. Also to add another layer of collection, something to reward the player, and to promote trading. So when doing this I thought what can I do to make them different in a way that they wouldn't be overpowered in battle. The reason I don't want them to be overpowered in battle is that I don't want player to feel like they need to use a shadow pokemon to gain the greatest edge in battle. I want the player to choose which type of pokemon they want to use in battle. So since shiny gain more experience I thought wouldn't it be kinda cool if shadow pokemon earned less. It seemed to fit the whole shadow motif. Unfortunately people viewed shadows in a negative light because of the decrease in experience. So I decided to remove this negative factor in them. I hope that explains what is in my head.

After such a long week of things to do I broke a promise.. and this week I will do it! I will finish the Pokemon Center's new look! Besides that we are going to take it a little easy so that I can finish that darn thing and so I can rest a little bit.

Where can I play?
Top 10 Forum Questions of the Week:

I talked last week about our community forums merging and adding some new features. One of the features is that every week the forum moderators will gather 10 questions that they want to ask me or Dan and we answer them each week. So here are the questions and answers.

1) xplay10: In the most recent level, "Celadon City", Celebi has mentioned that Mewtwo's triumph will end and won't be coming back for the sequels to come, along with Joey. Do you plan on having Pokemon like Mewtwo in terms of strength become the main villains for the upcoming sequels? If so, will they be shown in PTD following the main storyline?

I haven't decided if I will make a sequel yet, but if I did I would definitely have a strong main villain in the game that compares to Mewtwo. If I do make a sequel it would be a different game so PTD will stop once it reaches it's last level. You won't see the next villain on PTD.

2) Muncho11/Budgetspaner: What is the chance of actually finding a legendary beast (Suicune, Raikou, Entei) in the wild? And will we be able to catch multiple legendaries (Zapdos, Moltres, Articuno, Mewtwo), or will it be only one per profile?

I get asked this question about once per day lol. I'm not revealing the exact encounter rate of the Legendary Beast since it can lead to hacking. I'm still deciding on the second part of this question. But I would think that you can't get more than one of each of those per profile. (Unless you trade)

3) blastoise 889: What is your favorite Pokemon?

I have a soft spot for Bulbasaur, since he was my first pokemon. I also like Poliwag, which happens to be the first created pokemon.

4) Trainer Red: Where do you get your inspiration for PTD and what was your first acquaintance with Pokemon?

I've always liked Pokemon since I first saw it on a comic on the Nintendo Power Magazine. I bought the game before it became insanely popular in the States and I've really liked it since but I haven't liked how they have continued to make the same game over and over. I got inspired to make PTD when I noticed a bunch of other Pokemon Apps on the Android Marketplace. I figured I would make a Pokedex or a virtual pet simulator. As I was making the simulator I noticed that I might as well do something more enjoyable. So I saw that the highest grossing android game at the time was a tower defense. Immediately I thought about capturing your enemy and using them as towers.

5) almostpro: Do you plan on changing Pokemon adoption prices? (10 for a starter seems high because all other non-legendary are 5 at most. People would rather buy new game corner Pokemon than starters. I believe there should be a clearer distinction between Pokemon in terms of trade value and I believe dogs and Mews should be different in price as well.)

There is a possibility that the prices might change in the future, but it's not in my plans at this time.

6) gogogogo99: Will you ever let new PTD players get the past mystery gift avatars?

I'll find ways to re introduce the past avatars, without boring the people that already have them.

7) ZKS: Have you ever considered buying your own server? (As an accountant, I see how much my company spends on them. They don't have a massive start up cost, especially since our data is relatively small and upkeep is negligible)

I do have a host that I pay monthly for the server that hold the Pokemon Center, I think the game corner really slowed everything down, but now with the change on it I hope it will help the issue.

8) KimmyLube: Real world question - outside of PTD, what exactly is your real world job?

Outside of PTD, I'm a programmer, I work remotely from home. Hopefully soon I will be able to leave the job and focus completely on Sam and Dan Games.

9) Link: How do you think the cooperation with S&D Central will continue? Do you have any ideas for future cooperation plans?
I think think the cooperation between us and the Forums can only get better from now. I don't have anything specific but I'm sure we can work on some contest :)

10) PokeFan Gen. 1: Since the safari zone will be coming within the next month or so I was wondering will the level layout be similar to Rock Tunnel? With multiple rooms (zones) where you catch certain Pokemon? I feel like safari zone is such a key section it may take two weeks to actually put it together

Yeah the Safari Zone is a big deal, a lot of new pokemon will show up there. Right now I'm thinking of an idea for it that not everybody will get every pokemon but that each profile will get it's own pokemon out of a list. This is to encourage more trading. I also like the idea that your profile is unique from another. The layout itself might be similar to Rock Tunnel or it might be something new.

Well that was fun! Head to the forums if you want to submit your question and have them posted next week.

About Scams:

I want to talk about something that I have been receiving some emails about. I've been receive a lot of emails about people being Scammed. I know that Scams are a terrible thing, but it's one of the things that I really can't stop since most scams aren't doing anything illegal. So here are some tips to protect yourself.
  • If the person wants more than 6 pokemon, avoid the trade unless you personally know this person is trustworthy.
  • Do all trades through the Trading Center's system. Use the request feature that way you know that what you are getting is what it's supposed to be.
  • If the pokemon's picture doesn't show up on the Trading Center then that pokemon is not what it seems to be, do not trade for this pokemon.
I hope that those simple tips can help somebody out there from being Scammed. I can't really help you with scams cause there is really no proof of it happening. For all I know you are trying to scam me!

Weekly Update: What's coming next for PTD, Ninja-ja's update, and taking a break!

Want to play Ninja-ja? Get a shiny pikachu, shiny mew, shiny starter, shiny magikarp or have your suggestion for a weapon design to be used on Ninja-ja? Click here for more info on how you can get those things.

Happy Monday!

Ninja-ja's update will be coming this week, we apologize for the lateness.

I will be taking a break from updating PTD this week, meaning there won't be an update this weekend. Constantly updating a game can put a lot of strain so every once in a while I will take a weekly break to recharge my batteries.

Update: I'm considering adding a new mode called "Classic". Basically in this mode your pokemon's attacks will have the same stats as the original game or as close as possible. You will be able to use the same pokemon for both "Classic" and regular mode but there will be different achievements for each mode. In regular mode the attacks will be more balanced and towers will have health. In classic mode towers won't have health and attacks will do the attack power that the original games have (based on Gen 5). Vote on the poll and let me know what you think.

But I want to talk about what's coming next for the game and just comment in more detail about a lot of the questions and concerns you guys are all having.

First about the move balancing. By looking at the poll I can see that a lot of you guys liked the balancing except for a few special moves that could use some more love or uniqueness.

So for the next update you can expect quick attack and extremespeed (to name a few) will have a lower cooldown.

I will also be looking at how difficult or how high of a level you need to reach to get a move in order to figure out the appropriate damage it should do. If you can just buy a TM then chances are the move won't get significantly stronger, but there are some specific exceptions.

Let's look at Earthquake! It hits everybody on the field while it has a target in range for 20 attack power. Most of you think this is too low, which I can understand seeing as how powerful the move is in the real game. I can make it stronger (40 attack power) but there needs to be a drawback to such strength. I tried longer cooldowns but I just don't like how it makes some moves useless. Some people in the chat actually mentioned something that I originally sorta brushed off as I won't be adding that to the game. But today thinking about it, I think it can work. So for the next update I will be introducing.... Tower Health!

That's right your towers will now have a health bar, just like the enemy! But slow down a bit... the enemy isn't going to stop and do attacks towards you. The point is that a move like double-edge can now actually have a recoil damage (and much higher attack power). A move like recover is useful while defending, and best of all, defense moves will be useful both in attacking and defending, a defense move will lower the amount of damage received from all sources.

Another big thing is the duration of defense and offense buffs. It is a pain to keep using rage every time it runs out on one pokemon, imagine keeping it up on all 6! Therefore I'm drastically increasing the duration of these buffs. They won't last forever but you won't have to re apply them nearly as often making it more manageable to use in battle.

Now let's talk about trading. Trading is going to change radically. The trading center is coming, and no more trade codes! You will be able to search for the pokemon you want or search for somebody that wants your pokemon, also transferring pokemon from one save to another will be easier than ever.

Next update will also include two new story mode levels one being the S.S. Anne level and the other being the Vermillion Gym level. You can expect to get the HM Cut, and you can expect to use it on different levels to find secrets.

Lastly I haven't forgotten about Daily Codes, Missing Relearner moves, so those will be coming also.

Below is my progress on these things, keep checking back to see how I'm doing!

Tower Health (50%)
Move Balancing (0%)
Buff Durations (0%)
Trading Center (0%)
Story Levels (0%)
Daily Codes (0%)
New TMs (0%)
Relearn Moves (0%)
New Pokemon (0%)
New achievements (0%) (old ones won't get removed ever)

That's all I have for now, as always let me know what you think, read the FAQ and also read the comments on this blog post before you post as I won't be publishing comments that have already been asked.

  • Sword mode (75%)
    • Graphic (50%)
    • Programming (100%)
  • And a new different Bo Staff Mode (0%)
    • Programming (0%)
Okay now on to v2.6.1 a couple of new things on this update:
  • Trading is back again.
  • Shiny rate is now 1/1000 or 0.1% (more shinies!)
  • You can trade mew again.
Also I added a link to a trade chat if any of you are interested you can go to that one or use the one on the forum.
Now making a game as popular as PTD is going to get attention from a lot of people. Some of those people enjoy exploiting and hacking game. This is going to happen when the game is played offline and all the information is easy to edit. So instead of fighting them I've talked to them, and here is the resolution. If anybody wants to play the game with pokemon that are easier to catch (hit them once and they will turn red), x3 exp given per kill, x5 money given per kill they can, why not?

So here is the link to the official hacked PTD version http://www.hackedarcadegames.com/game/5714/Pokemon-Tower-Defense.html

Also if you feel like cloning your pokemon is a good way to pass the time then go ahead, no harm done.

But... what about all the legit fans, all the people that don't want all this hacking and duping and easy exp?

What about all the people that bought Ninja-ja or that donated in the past? Is that all for nothing?

Fans, I got your answer.... Multiplayer!

Multiplayer will be ran all on a server, similar to how MMOs work, so there will be no duping, no free shinies (the shiny rate will return to lower rates in multiplayer), everybody will start from scratch, and if you donated or bought Ninja-ja you will get the following benefits.
  • You will get beta access to multiplayer (Play before anybody else)
  • You will get your shiny codes again so that your shiny pikachu, starters, and mew will be added to your multiplayer account, and will be totally legit.
  • You can think of Multiplayer almost as a sequel to PTD.
  • All your single player profiles for PTD will not be deleted, ever.
  • Multiplayer will be almost like a new game so it should be expected that you start over in a new game.
  • You won't be able to import anything from single player to multiplayer or vice versa.
  • The people who donated or bought Ninja-ja will get new codes, meaning they start over also but they might start over with a shiny starter (level 5) or a shiny pikachu (lvl 1) or shiny mew (lvl 1).
  • All the levels on multiplayer will be different from single player.
  • Multiplayer will have co-op and versus modes.
  • There is no date on multiplayer, most of the focus right now is on single player.
PTD Weekly Update Progress: Update out now!
  • Final Touches (100%)
    • Double Slap will no longer slap for more than it is supposed to (100%)
    • On your profile "Pokemon" should be spelled correctly (100%)
  • New Story Level (100%)
    • Intro (100% done)
    • Waves (100% done)
    • Ending (100%)
